Biodiversity is the variety of all life on earth – it is nature by another name. Humans have evolved as part of biodiversity and it provides us with everything we need to live: food, air, water, medicine, and the raw materials and processes that support economic activity and development. It is essentially our life support system.
In the last 50 years, the world has lost two-thirds of its wildlife. The way humans are living today is driving the loss of habitats and the mass extinction of species to the point where global biodiversity and our own future is now under threat.
In Biodiversity Modules 1 we examine how biodiversity evolved, our place in nature and why we need it to survive. In Module 2 we will examine why biodiversity is declining and what we can all do to protect biodiversity by becoming proactive within our communities, creating space for nature and reviewing our ecological footprint. If we all play our part and take action, we can ensure a healthy, resilient planet for generations to come.
